I SHIT YOU NOT

When i was 14 i was in to all the glam rock stuff...BOWIE..ROXY...T REX ...ALICE COOPER ..etc..then one day i heard the new sound that change my life...my brother was playing WHITE LIGHT WHITE HEAT ..BY ..THE VELVET UNDERGROUND...fuck me this was a new sound i'd never heard before... i was hooked ..i swapped my IGGY POP LP for ANDY WARHOLS VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO LP...off my cousin ronnie...then TRANSFORMER came out and WALK ON THE WILDSIDE became the anthem of summer 1972...LOU REED AND THE VELVETS were my heros and posters and pics took pride of place on my bedroom wall along with my signed FREE poster and my glam stuff...a couple of years later i added my piece of ALEX HARVEY jumper i swipped when i saw him in concert at the mayfair...In june 1974 i was sixteen just about to hit 17..my dream came true i got tickets for my friend lynn and myself to see LOU REED live at the city hall, second row from the front...i was accompanied by my brother and his friend who had seats further back... i told the bouncers when i went in that i would be going on stage...they laughed at me and said i wouldn't get passed them...aha ha!...when LOU was singing VICIOUS he said the words "those two" instead of VICIOUS and pointed at me and my mate lynn...that was our invite to join him on stage...i gave the bouncers the smuggest look as i passed them to climb on stage...there we were on stage with LOU REED infront of thousands..imagine that!!...i thought i was dreaming..he took off his leather jacket as he did his finale bow and put it round my shoulders we all filed out back stage for after show drinks and stuff..i left the city hall with lou and the band (not the velvets)...amidst screaming fans and in to an awaiting rolls royce i felt like a star wow!...we then went to a private bar at the turks head hotel...his then girlfriend or wife was so nice to me she could see how awe struck i was and i must admit i was very naive at the time and painfully shy...i started to worry that i might be whisk off to some den of eniquity drugged and sold to the slave trade..lol...but she was so kind she took loads of pictures of me with lou..thing is she practically ignored my friend lynn who was being so forward and loud..bless she was just excited too... i still remember what i was wearing my velvetesque attire..black velvet (of course) oxford trousers...black pointy chealsea boots....and my specially commissioned black lou reed jumper (see tranformer sleeve) what my mum knit for me... i came in to the room from being to the toilet lou said in his american drawl "heres the little lady in black"...the whole thing was just magic!...NOW THEN...here comes the embarrassing part...my brother had returned home minus one little sister and told mam "oh she has buggered off with lou reed"...course mam went straight in to panic mode..." oh my god tommy " she screeches to dad "she has run off with that bloody lou reed, we will never see her again"...so as we had no car she knocks up next door neighbour to whizz her and dad over to the turkshead hotel...to *RESCUE ME!*....im sitting there with lou reed thinking im the coolest person on the planet...when in walks my mam..IN HER SLIPPERS... and demands to know which ones lou reed!...he slowly stood up and and said "im lou reed"...to which my mam goes holding her hand out to shake his..and im sure she curtsied..."oh lou reed pleased to meet you i love all your records"...i just sat there mouth agape ...all my credibility down the drain as i watched my mam chatting to lou reed in her slippers....i sat in silence on the way home arms firmly folded...i went to work the next day in shock..i nearly got sacked for falling asleep....came home from work for my tea to find mam sitting round the kitchen table proudly boasting to her friends that she had met lou reed...she was like a teenager..i didn't speak to her for about a week... ive told this story to a few people but i normaly leave the bit out about my mam storming in, in her slippers...lol....one regrette i have is that amidst all the excitement and my shameful exit i forgot to give the lady with lou my address to send me some pics of us together..i'd give anything for just one of those pics..>:0(... So...according to Koos one has to eat fast to become one of his favourite storytellers...

Pete must wolf his food down!

LOL

Great story & the best part is the part you usually leave out... your Mum in slippers coming to the pub to "rescue" you.

LOVE it!!

Hey, Gypsy, guess you could say your mum slipp(er)edup a bit there...!

You must have wanted to die! I can just feel the humiliation of being 14 and shown up like that by your mum...bless her!

Great story..thanks for 'fessing' up, wee friend.

Murphy passed away quietly this afternoon wrapped in her blankie in her favourite spot on the front seat of George's truck.

The vet was kind.

She now rests wrapped in her blanket up the mountain behind our place. She has a view of the valley & she can hear the creek roiling by.
The same creek that descends into our valley & runs past our house...

Rest in peace, Murph.

anne marie my mam didn't have a choice as i used to babble on about it 24/7.....jodie i feel privileged to have been born in the 50's as the era was such a fantastic time for change in music and fashion..ie: the 60,s 70,s some of the 80's lol..and the techno 90's ..but to have been part of the earlier three is the best.....dale ive left a comment on your blog..i feel for you..x...

Hi Gypsy

Thanks for your kind words regarding poor Murphy. I know she's in a good place, but I miss her terribly.

I had no idea it would be this difficult - I seem to have spent the last couple of days crying...

You should see me at work. Thank goodness I've been working in the shop - tear streaks in the car wax...i shit you not!

LOL

Hi Gypsy,
I think Alfie is a big softie under his macho persona.

Mummy likes football because of all the fit men too. She just pretends to follow the ball action, but I know she's looking at bums and legs the whole time. I heard her say once that all footballers look good from the neck down, and sometimes you get lucky and they look good from the neck up.

See, me and mummy aren't too different.
